LADIES NIGHT!

RUNNING INFORMATION EVENING - 6TH FEBRUARY 2015

On Friday 6th February 2015, East Coast AC will host a running 'Information Evening' in the Market Yard, Station Road, Larne.  The members only event will kick off at 7.30pm (sharp) and will offer guidance for athletes in relation to various aspects of running and related subjects.

This will include information on

- Nutrition

- Run/Race Strategies

- Clothing

- Footwear

- Training

- Developing your running

- Recovery

- Upcoming races and possible targets for the club

Alongside this, there will also be guest speakers who will offer advice and information on health related subjects such as health screening for running and eating disorders, two things that are very 'current' in the world of running.

There will also be specific time spent on preparing for the Larne Half Marathon, this will include training matters, pre-race plans, in-race plans and also a look at important sections of the course.  This section in particular proved popular with club members the last time we offered this seminar.  Although it is geared towards the upcoming Larne Half Marathon, the majority of the the advice is very much relevant to any upcoming race.

The evening will then finish with a question and answer session, during which, club coaches and other relevant guests will be on hand to answer as many questions as required.

We would highly recommend this Information Evening to all club members, especially those who were not able to attend the last one.  All you have to do is turn up on Friday 6th February 2015!

East Coast AC Annual General Meeting 2014

The club's second annual general meeting (AGM) will be held on Friday 7th March 2014 at 7pm in The Masonic Hall on Mill Brae in Larne.

"An Annual General Meeting (commonly abbreviated as AGM) is a meeting that official bodies, and associations involving the general public, are required by law or the a constitution, to hold. An AGM is held every year to elect the Committee and inform their members of previous and future activities. It is an opportunity for the members to receive copies of the Clubs accounts as well as reviewing fiscal information for the past year and asking any questions regarding the directions the club will take in the future."

We believe it is important for our members to attend as it gives you the opportunity to ask questions, voice opinions and to have an input on who you feel should represent East Coast on the committee and to take the club forward.

On the night our current committee will resign from their roles. These positions will become vacant and open to any member who would like to remain or become part of the committee. This provides an opportunity for new faces and new ideas however an understanding of the roles is necessary as each come with their own responsibilities. Everyone present can elect any member who puts themselves up for nomination to the committee for the forthcoming year.

The agenda for the evening will be as follows:

- Introduction
- Chairperson's report: Highlights of 2013
- Treasurers report: membership statistics and brief financials
- Going Forward: continuing to improve athletics in the Borough of Larne
- Election of the new committee
- Any other business

We realise that many of you will have valuable skill sets that could be useful to East Coast AC.  We therefore encourage all members to read the emailed Roles and Responsibilities of the committee (and non-committee) and consider if this is something you would like to be part of. This is your chance to mould the future of East Coast AC!

If you cannot make the AGM but would still like to be considered for any of the roles please contact us in advance along with a short paragraph detailing which role you are interested in.

The present committee roles and current members are:
Chairperson - Justin Maxwell
Vice Chairperson - Greg Lavery
Secretary - James Brown
Treasurer - Catherine Maxwell
Head Coach - Mark McManus
Club Captain - Nat Glenn
Social Secretary - Rosie Kerr
Head of Club Development - Marie Glover
Website & Social Media Officer - Catherine Maxwell
Press Officer - Ryan Maxwell
Other members - David Clarke & Andy Guy

Non Committee Roles:
Welfare Officer (Designated Officer) - Gillian Leetch-Armstrong
Deputy Welfare Officer - David Clarke

Although an official event, the club would like our AGM to be as enjoyable as possible. We would like to encourage all attending to stay after the meeting for some refreshments and a little socialising.

*Important Notice* As per AGM guidelines, only fully paid members of East Coast AC can attend the AGM.

Previous event:  Ladies (Running) Day Out!

East Coast AC are running a Ladies Day Out on Sunday 6th October 2013 to Belfast Telegraph Runher, Stormont.

Runher is a race for ladies only, who can choose to run or walk the 5k, or take on the 10k challenge.  Belfast Telegraph is now in it's 7th year and is all about getting women running (or walking), and attracts more than 3000 runners every year!

Runher is an event for all women: from competitive runners to fun runners, and would be perfect for our recent Couch to 5k graduates!

East Coast AC are offering all ladies discounted entry into the event (£15) and have organised transport to and from Stormont.  All you have to do is fill out one of the application forms at training (Tuesday or Thursday nights) and give this to Ryan Maxwell or Catherine Boyd along with your race registration fee of £15.  All competitors receive a Runher technical t-shirt and very generous goody bags on completion of the event.

The organised bus will be leaving Larne Town Centre at 11:30am and returning from Belfast at 4:30pm, and only costs £2 per person.  To reserve your place on the bus please either email us ([email protected]) or inform us when returning your form as spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

This year the event is also running a FREE Dash for Kids race prior to the 5k and 10k event, so why not bring all the family along for a fun day out!

The main races start and finish at Parliament Buildings.  This means that while you’re running, you can take in the beautiful grounds of the Stormont Estate.  The course follows the traditional route towards the cricket pitch, then finds its way out at the bottom of Prince Of Wales Avenue. For the ladies who have entered the 5k, you’ll be glad to hear you only run this once. For those of you who have entered the 10k, you get to take in the scenery for a second time as you’ll be running the course twice!  A map of the course can be found here.

The timings for the event are as follows:

Dash for Kids - 1:30pm

Official warm up - 1:45pm

5k run and walk - 2pm

10k run - 2:30pm

Race packs will be collected by East Coast AC and distributed to all runners prior to the event.  If you enter through East Coast but do not plan to use the bus to Belfast, race packs can be collected from Pure Running, Belfast from Thursday 3rd October, or from the Runher team on race day (up to 1pm).

Please note, to avail of the discount, please return all registration forms to Ryan Maxwell or Catherine Boyd before Thursday 26th September.  If you have already entered the race, please let us know via email ([email protected]) so we can distribute lots of lovely Runher goodies to everyone!  The bus is open to runners, friends and family, although please confirm your space before Thursday 26th September so we can guarantee you a seat.

Previous event:  Couch to 5k Programme

East Coast AC are running a 9 week Couch to 5k programme starting 23rd July 2013.

The Couch to 5k plan is designed to get just about anyone off the couch and ready to run a 5k in just 9 weeks!  Our qualified coaches challenge and motivate you to achieve your goal, and at the end of the process a graduation will be held for all participants.

How does it work?

Probably the biggest challenge a novice runner faces is not knowing how or where to start. Often when trying to get into exercise, we can overdo it, feel defeated and give up when we’re just getting started. Couch to 5K works because it starts with a mix of running and walking, to gradually build up your fitness and stamina. Week One involves running for just a minute at a time, creating realistic expectations and making the challenge feel achievable right from the start.
Who is Couch to 5k for?

Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you’ve never run before, or if you want to get back into being more active, Couch to 5K is a cheap and easy way of getting fitter and more healthy. If you have any health concerns about beginning an exercise regime such as Couch to 5K, make an appointment to see your GP and discuss it with them first.

What are the benefits?

There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For starters, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight; especially if combined with a healthy diet.

There is evidence it may help increase bone density in some people, which can help guard against bone diseases such as osteoporosis.  Perhaps the unexpected side-effects are the mental benefits of running. Taking on the challenge of Couch to 5K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal. Running regularly can also be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to combat depression.

By completing this programme as part of a team, you will have your own personal cheering squad, as well as make some great friends along the way.

How do you get started?

Register your interest in the programme via email ([email protected]), preferably by 19th July.  Download and print the application form below.  Once completed, please return to ECAC (details of how are shown on the application form), or give to one of our coaches on the first night.  If you do not have a printer, we will also provide application forms on the night.

Come along to the first session along with a small one off fee of £5.  This will cover all coaching expenses and graduation expenses.  We would recommend all participants to wear comfortable trainers and a change of dry clothes (all sessions are outdoors, and will be held in all weather conditions).

The prgramme will be held every Tuesday night starting on 23rd July and finishing 17th September.  Training will be once weekly (but you may get some homework) and will start at 6pm from Sandy Bay playing fields, Larne (Larne Youth/East Coast AC HQ beside the main pavilion).

During sessions, coaches will explain the benefits of all exercises and be available to answer any questions.  Sessions will last for approximately 40 minutes.

Graduation

At the end of the 9 weeks (Saturday 21st September), all participants will take part in a timed 5k parkrun.  Parkruns are suitable for all abilities and we hope to have one right on our doorstep at Carnfunnock by this stage.  All of our club will be out to support and cheer on the Couch to 5k team, along with friends and family members.  This is an extremely rewarding and impressive achievement which we will recognise by holding a graduation and bbq (weather permitting) after the event which is open to all participants, their family and friends.

For any further information please contact ECAC using the form on our homepage or via email at: [email protected].
